Welcome to Dr. Stymie’s Lab Music Division, where we finally recognize the most important section of the marching band that never appears on the field during the show:
THE PARENTS.
MarchingBandParentology 201 is dedicated to the moms, dads, grandparents, and other heroic volunteers who discovered that having a kid in marching band somehow means they joined marching band too.
You came to watch your kid perform. Next thing you knew, you were pushing a 300-pound equipment rack across wet grass, loading percussion gear into a trailer at 11:00 p.m., moving props, serving food, fixing uniforms, hauling coolers, and asking:
“Where does this thing go?”
Dr. Stymie and Research Assistant #001 have spent countless Friday nights studying the phenomenon and developed the official Band Parent Formula:
Load + Push + Set Up + Cheer + Tear Down + Repeat = BAND PARENT
Possible side effects include owning school-color clothing you never intended to buy, memorizing the show music, checking the weather obsessively, becoming emotionally invested in yard lines, and developing suspiciously strong opinions about how equipment should be loaded into the trailer.
But somewhere between the rehearsals, competitions, late nights, long drives, and endless equipment carts, something happens.
You stop seeing it as your kid’s band.
It becomes your band family.
Dr. Stymie’s conclusion?
