Welcome to Dr. Stymie’s Lab: Heavy Athletics Division, where the equipment is heavy, the kilts are mandatory, and throwing perfectly good telephone poles across a field is considered a legitimate athletic pursuit.

Highland Games 101 explores the glorious science behind the caber toss, stone put, Scottish hammer, weight for distance, weight over bar, and sheaf toss. Students will investigate the delicate relationship between strength, balance, timing, technique, and the occasional questionable decision that begins with, “How heavy is that thing?”

Under Dr. Stymie’s supervision, athletes learn that brute strength alone won't get the job done. A successful throw requires training, patience, respect for the sport, and enough technique to make several hundred years of Scottish tradition look almost effortless.

Extensive field research has led Dr. Stymie to one undeniable conclusion:

“Size matters. Technique matters more.”

Possible side effects of advanced Highland Games study include an unexplained desire to wear tartan, measuring random logs for potential cabers, referring to large rocks as “training equipment,” and believing nearly every heavy object would be more interesting if someone tried to throw it.

But beneath the questionable science is something serious: heritage, sportsmanship, strength, community, and respect for a tradition that has brought athletes together for generations.
